Getting there
Sydney Airport (SYD) is the gateway. From the UK and Ireland expect roughly 22 to 24 hours with one stop, usually through the Gulf or Singapore. There are direct services from across Australia and New Zealand, and one-stop routes from South Africa and the United States.
The airport sits about eight kilometres south of the city. The train to Central takes around fifteen minutes and runs every few minutes, which beats a taxi on a match day. For the long-haul arrival, book the flight the moment your travel dates are firm. Spring 2027 will be busy right across Australia and the good fares go first.
Where to stay
Three areas cover most trips. All sit on the train line to the Olympic Park and Moore Park venues, so you are trading view and atmosphere, not access.
Circular Quay and The Rocks
The postcard. Walk to the harbour, the ferries and the bridge climb. Best for first-timers who want Sydney at the door.
Surry Hills and Darlinghurst
The food and the night. Terraces, small bars and a short ride to either venue precinct. The locals' choice.
Sydney Olympic Park
Closest to the Olympic Park venues and easiest on the big match nights. Quieter and newer, with a direct train to the centre.
Matches in the city
Sydney hosts two World Cups in 2027, six weeks apart, at three venues.
Rugby World Cup 2027, 1 Oct to 13 Nov
Stadium Australia at Sydney Olympic Park is the big one, capacity around 82,000. It hosts the final on 13 November, both semi-finals, the bronze final and two quarter-finals, along with pool matches. This is the stadium for the closing week of the tournament.
Allianz Stadium, the rebuilt Sydney Football Stadium at Moore Park, is the newer, more central ground, capacity around 42,500. It hosts pool matches and two round of 16 games, and it is a short light rail ride or walk from the city.
Netball World Cup 2027, 25 Aug to 5 Sep
Every match is at Qudos Bank Arena, Australia's largest indoor arena, seating around 18,000. It is on the same Olympic Park site as Stadium Australia, so the transport advice above applies unchanged.

Getting around
One Opal card, or a contactless bank card, covers trains, buses, ferries and light rail. Tap on and off. There is a daily cap and a Sunday cap that makes weekend sightseeing cheap.
Trains run direct to Sydney Olympic Park on event days, which covers Stadium Australia and Qudos Bank Arena on the same site. Moore Park, for Allianz Stadium, is a short light rail ride or walk from the centre. The harbour ferries are worth a trip in their own right, and the Manly service is the best value harbour cruise in the city.
